Perspectives on the Clery Act

CLHE conducted an informal poll asking Marketplace of Ideas web site visitors to answer the following poll question:

The Clery Act:
Should be repealed.
Should be amended because it imposes an unnecessary burden on institutions.
Should be amended to require institutions to collect and disseminate more data.

To help increase the number of responses, CLHE sent out emails to members and various listserves of interest to college and university administrators.  There is no doubt that the 80 respondents are most likely administrators, so this certainly affects the results.

The results are represented in the following pie chart:

As can be seen, there is significant concern about the Clery Act.  An incredible 84 percent of the respondents believed the Clery Act should be repealed or the law should be amended because it imposes an unnecessary burden on institutions—most of this 84 percent wanted to amend, not repeal the law.

However, it also was interesting that 16 percent of the respondents thought the Clery Act should be strengthened.
